Penny Byrne is a highly experienced objects conservator specialising in ceramics and glass, with a career spanning over 20 years in institutional and independent practice. With particular expertise in large-scale ceramic works, outdoor installations, and technically demanding treatments, she provides expert conservation advice, condition assessments, and treatment of complex and significant cultural materials, including public art and built heritage ceramics.
Her work encompasses the conservation and restoration of ceramic objects ranging from antique and archaeological material through to mid-century design and contemporary art. She is equally experienced in the treatment of glass and mixed-media works, including large-scale and materially challenging objects.
Penny’s practice is characterised by a rigorous understanding of material science alongside a nuanced appreciation of historical and cultural context. She has led conservation projects for major public and private collections and regional institutions and galleries.
