For the past 35 years, our members have worked on every major restoration project in Melbourne and contributed to the preservation of many much-loved buildings throughout Victoria.
Professional Affiliations / Qualifications
Steve Byvoet – began his career with Hendersons doing commercial cladding, paving and granite and marble installation. Now, with over 15 years as a banker mason, he has worked on State Library of Victoria, Melbourne GPO and ANZ Gothic Bank for Heritage Building Services.
Matt Cartlidge – started in England as a banker mason over 30 years ago. Worked on the restorations of the 11th century cathedrals at Exeter and Chichester and later on Supreme Law Courts, Melbourne Town Hall and St. Patricks and St. Pauls Cathedrals in Melbourne.
Stewart Dowding – for 35 years has mainly worked in heritage stone restoration, training with Lodge Brothers. Has worked on Shrine of Remembrance, Treasury Building, Scots Church and Pentridge Prison amongst others.
Ben Duverger – initially a civil engineer, now with 10 years experience as an estimator and project manager in heritage restoration works – including in Asia.
Will Lay – began his apprenticeship as a stonemason in 1994, working on St. Patricks cathedral and Parliament House. Has managed major projects on Melbourne GPO, St. Ignatius church in Richmond and St. Peters in Toorak. Spent 4 years in France where he worked on the cathedrals of Bazas and Langon and the St. Andre Cathedral bell tower. Studied at Federation de la Compagnon in Libourne.
Andrew Machin – trained in England 37 years ago, worked on restorations in London and Kent – mainly as a banker mason. In Melbourne, has worked on Parliament House, Royal Exhibition Building and Newman College at Melbourne University.
Mick Tripp – has over 30 years in the stone trade, doing commercial cladding, paving and restoration. Has worked on 333 Collins St., Melbourne Grammar School, Ormond College at Melbourne University and also on the construction of substantial new residential buildings in Brighton, Toorak and Point Leo.
David Williams – has been the stonemasonry teacher at Holmesglen TAFE for many years. With well over 30 years experience – beginning in the UK – has worked on the original Law Building and Queens College at Melbourne University, Parliament House and Melbourne Town Hall amongst many. A highly skilled carver, his work can be found throughout Melbourne including outside Melbourne GPO (the granite purse) and he has exhibited his own sculptures.
